Indian Prince Motocycle Ride Back Through Time Part #1

One morning I decided to gas up my 1928 Indian Prince "Motocycle" (original company spelling) and ride 100 miles from Rochester, NY to Camillus, NY. I was intent on riding the 100 miles for the reason of walking through the Camillus Cutlery auction/closing. It was 30 years ago that I had worked there as a machine operator. I wanted to make the trip back in time on my vintage machine for nostalgia. I had packed a lunch and brought along my video camera. I left the east side of Rochester traveling exclusively on back country roads. I was really enjoying the ride. I felt like a person back in the twenties, time transported into the future of 2007. It was 100 miles of back country roads where my top speed was 45-50 MPH. I left in the morning around 9:00PM and arrived at the cutlery around 2:30. My high tech speedometer read 101 miles. All along the trip my motocycle performed very well. I was in heaven just hearing that little 350cc engine chuffing away. I thought about Springfield, MA and all the people that are dead now that designed and built this machine. I got so many thumbs up, waves, smiles and just a feeling like I was welcomed to the 21st century. What a feeling. I was able to tour the cutlery on the last full day of the auction. I was amazed at how the place looked the same after 30 years. This day marked the end of yet another American industry original. The company was over, and the machines were now silent. The smell of the cutting fluids, oil, buffing compounds was still in the air. I think that this trip was a good final memorial to the death of not only the Camillus Cutlery, but American industry as we knew it. Thank you, the men and women of our armed forces, past and present, for all you have done!
